Adventure tourism: how to prepare your rural accommodation for this traveler

Hiking, cycling, canyoning, kayaking, climbing or surfing: active and adventure tourism brings more travelers to rural and natural areas across Spain every year. For a rural house, a holiday apartment or a small hotel near the mountains, the coast or a nature reserve, these guests have very specific needs. Knowing them makes it easy to stand out.

Who the adventure traveler is

There is no single profile, but there are two main groups:

  • Soft adventure: families, couples and groups of friends looking for hiking, greenway cycling, calm-water kayaking, horse riding or birdwatching. No previous experience needed.
  • Hard adventure: experienced athletes who come to climb, go canyoning, rafting or diving, and usually travel with a lot of gear.

Both share one thing: they spend the day outdoors, leave early, come back tired and appreciate a place that makes logistics easy.

What your accommodation needs

It doesn’t take a big investment. These details make the difference:

  • Secure storage for bikes and gear: a lockable garage or storeroom for bikes, boards or climbing equipment.
  • A place to wash and dry: a hose to clean bikes and boots and a ventilated space to dry clothes and wetsuits.
  • Early or packed breakfasts: many leave at dawn, so an early breakfast or a picnic is much appreciated.
  • Useful local information: routes, maps, weather forecasts, activity companies and nearby health centres. A digital welcome guide with this information saves you repeating it to every guest.
  • Partnerships with local businesses: agreements with guides, surf schools or bike rentals so you can recommend them or offer packages.

Late arrivals and groups: the check-in challenge

These travelers often arrive at the end of the day, after a long drive or a first activity, and often in groups. Even so, the law requires every guest to be registered: Royal Decree 933/2021 requires you to collect the details of every traveler and report them to the authorities.

Doing it on paper, one by one and at the last minute, is uncomfortable for you and for them. With the online check-in of Registro Parte Viajeros, each guest fills in their details and signs from their phone before arriving, and the form is sent automatically to SES Hospedajes or the relevant authority. If they arrive at midnight, you only need to hand over the key or the access code.

For large groups, each traveler can complete their own form with the same link, without you having to collect everyone’s documents. And if someone doesn’t do it, we alert you before arrival.

Conclusion

Adapting your accommodation to adventure tourism is mostly about making logistics easy: where to store gear, how to dry it, when to have breakfast and what to do nearby. If you also sort out guest registration before they arrive, your guests will start their stay resting, not filling in forms.
